The tourism industry, a huge driver of the entire North Queensland economy, welcomed the news and event of the first arrivals of international tourists back into the region (with many more to arrive during the months ahead). The accommodation houses, hotels, tour operators and all industries that fall within and around this vital industry to the region, will benefit from the increasing financial stability the reopening of borders will bring.

It was the first Auction to launch the new year, where we saw the three-bedroom, Caravonica home go under the hammer. After receiving quite the crowd on-site from interested parties, the property sold for a total of $375,000.

An exciting new initiative has been declared for commercial property within the Cairns CBD. After a difficult 24 months for small businesses, Renew Australia, a national social enterprise designed to catalyse community renewal, has set its sights on Cairns City streets. In partnership with Cairns Regional Council, Renew Australia is focusing its initiative on transforming empty storefronts into creative spaces for local start-ups. The initiative will also partner with landlords; offering up vacant business spaces on a 30-day rolling licensing agreement to budding entrepreneurs looking to kick-start their small business.

It was an exciting announcement last week for both Cairns residents and travellers, revealing budget airline carrier, Bonza, is set to bring new direct flights to the region. Come mid-2022, Cairns travellers will now have the opportunity to fly direct between Mackay, Rockhampton, and the Sunshine Coast, which are currently unserved by other carriers. The newly announced airline will soon become Australia’s only independent budget carrier, with a focus on connecting Regional Cities within Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

North Queensland Airports CEO, Richard Barker, stated that the additional Bonza flights to Cairns Airport will add over 3,000 seats per week to the city. It is certainly an appealing announcement for not only aiding in the recovery of the Tourism sector but also in reconnecting families living in Regional sectors across Australia.
